Quick verdict
Scooby Doo gets the Snakes and Ladders game treatment. It’s simplicity itself, timeless, luck based and basic gameplay for young players that will soon wear.
The game and gameplay
Never played Snakes and Ladders? Surely you have! It’s a square board made up of 100 squares, ten across and ten rows tall, numbered 1 in the bottom left corner, 2 on the next square to the right, all the way up to 100 at the top left corner. Comical Scooby Doo graphics theme the game to Scooby Doo games.
Players take a token and place it on the first square. Roll one die, and move from left to right the number of spaces indicated on the die. When you reach the end of a row, you move up one space and then back across the board from right to left again, following the pattern of the numbered squares.
The only exceptions to this mechanic are whenever a player’s token lands on the head of a snake, or the bottom of a ladder.
Landing on a snake means you slither down its body to the bottom. This can be very frustrating, especially for younger players, but it is a way to learn not to succumb to bad sportsmanship.
The flip side of the snakes are the ladders. Landing at the bottom of a ladder means moving all the way up it. This can also be frustrating for the other players, and usually results in gloating by the player whose token got catapulted so far into the lead!
The first player to get their token to square 100 wins the game. Some rules indicate that the player must roll an exact number to get home, though most parents will not insist on that…
Pros and cons
Scooby Doo Snakes and Ladders is simple to learn, looks nice, with some decent graphics based on the TV animated classic, and is built nicely to be hard wearing.
The boosts and downfalls of the snakes and ladders are frustrating, and can lead to arguments between immature children.
The game play quickly grows tiresome, so it’s worth having other games on hand to mix up with this one.

The verdict
There’s not much to recommend this game above any other versions, but if your child is Scooby mad, then this Scooby Snakes and Ladders game may appeal.
