Quick verdict

Are your kids hungry for some fast-moving, zoo animal fun? If so, Hungry Hungry Hippos can be a loud but entertaining choice.

The game and gameplay

It will take less than a minute to explain to your kids how to play Hungry Hungry Hippos. The only setup required is to place all of the round, white hippo foods in the middle of the board and to have each player select which mammal they want to ally with. (If you pack the game away in the box each time, it’s quite a challenge to dismantle. Ed.)

After somebody shouts “Go!”, the feeding frenzy begins. Contending players hit their hippo’s tail lever feverishly in attempt to not just give their animal indigestion, but to collect as many marbles as possible (you’d think they were pigs and not hippos!). The idea is to hit your adopted hippo’s tail as fast as possible rather than in any sort of pattern. When the last white ball has been munched, players add up how many pieces of food are in their hippo’s “stomach”. The happiest, fattest hippo wins that round.

You can also play just one marble at a time, but I think doing so makes the game lose most of its spark and charm. If you have two players, why not control multiple hippos?

Pros and cons

Hungry Hungry Hippos is a simple game that will thrill many kids (and some adults, too!). It’s a toy with a silliness that will delight young players round after round.

It kind of goes without saying, but Hungry Hungry Hippos is extremely loud. It’s not for parents who migraine easily or might get annoyed because of the game. It has many small parts (marbles) and is highly susceptible to breaking due to you smacking the stuffing out of those poor hippos and all.

It may not have lasting appeal for all kids due to the simplistic concept of the gameplay. I recommend a purchase for households with younger kids only.

The verdict

Hungry Hungry Hippos is a good choice for bringing smiles to young people’s faces. Just be sure to pick up a pack of earplugs in addition to the game.

Hungry Hungry Hippos Report Card

NEW

by: Elisabeth

I was surprised at the response we saw to this game. We have a wide age span of kids playing as well as an adult or two if that seems helpful. The concept seems manageable. Balls put in middle, hippos eat balls. Our experience was that when everyone was pushing their lever to get their hippo to lunge out and eat the ball(s), the game jumped around quite a bit, the balls would fly out of the arena, the kids got worked up (hyper) with no outlet to calm down. It is a noisy game as well. Grade given: C-

Game Idea…..

by: Nicole Goddu

I am unsure if this idea already exists, it’s a spin off idea of the game “HUNGRY, HUNGRY HIPPOS ” One of my favorite games as a child. In face I might have to buy it again just so I can play it with my daughter.

My idea:

” HUNGRY HUNGRY HOMER ” Homer off the Simpsons.

Make the game/board just like the Hungry Hippo, but instead of using hippo’s use Homer Simpsons head, having him eat donuts. I mean how perfect is that game idea? Everyone loves the Simpsons they are huge. The market for that would be amazing, collectors would get a kick out of it and most off all it would get families playing games together, possibly bringing back Hungry Hippos????

I was alittle upset the other day while watching a old Simpsons episode it was about Homer protesting these baseball big shots about changing teams. Anyways he descided to go on a hunger strike and in the end the crowd was calling him ” Hungry, hungry Homer!” I mean I know that show was made before my idea, maybe even an influence but I never saw that episode until yesterday.

So if anyone can help me out with this idea or even tell me if it has already been created then that would be great. Heck I’d be willing to split the profit 50/50 with anyone with a suggestion.

If you woild like to contact me personally please feel free to anytime my name is:

I am serious if this hasn’t become something and we can make it happen I will split 50/50 with whomever knows the way to make it happen. I’D BUY IT FORSURE…

Cheers!

It used to be better made

by: The Good Old Days Guy

HHH is now a shadow of its old self. It comes with plastic balls, not marbles; you have to assemble the game and break it down each time before you put it away; packing it back into the box is a really tough challenge; the balls get stuck under the Hippos’ necks sometimes; our Hippos need repairing about once every ten minutes. NOT impressed. Hasbro, spend a bit more money (or do a deluxe edition) and DO THIS RIGHT. It’s a classic game — or was — but this kind of shoddy manufacture does your company no favors at all.
