Quick verdict
An evergreen classic, The Game of Life presents some quite realistic challenges to your children and will help prepare them for future decisions, all in a fun, stealth-learning package!
The game and gameplay
I like The Game of Life because of the way that it takes you through the various stages of life. It brings you out at the teen stage where you can chose if you want to go to college or get a job.
This is quite realistic, because it lets you chose higher careers if you have a college degree (but you have debts from tuition) than if you don’t. This is a good start and the game follows a similar “realistic” theme throughout.
Editor’s note: There are now several versions of this game, including the Spongebob Squarepants and Pirates of the Caribbean editions. Click on the eBay links for more info.
Pros and cons
Various real-life experiences and expenses continue through the game including getting married, having children, buying a house, car and house insurance, taxes, stocks etc. All exist in the game. This is very good and realistic.
The design is bright and busy, perfect for younger kids, while still accessible to ‘Tweens and teens.
The only drawback is that some of the rules aren’t very clear, which can lead to confusion.
The verdict
Apart from the rule issue, The Game of Life is a great game that lasts for a reasonable time and is entertaining throughout. A must-have for your family!
