Song Lyrics Game: Smash or Trash

Song Lyrics Game:
Smash or Trash
Number of players:
Smash or Trash is a fun party activity that challenges players to rewrite song lyrics and have their creations voted on by the other players. It’s guaranteed fun for ‘sing in the shower’ and literary types, but might turn off the less creative in your crowd.
The game and gameplay
Players receive a number of Opinion cards based on the total number of players. The dealer then deals song cards to each player, which they may look at, plus a subject card, which they must leave face down and not read.
The seven-minute sand timer is turned over and then all the players grab their subject card and pencil.
Now each player chooses one song from their song card (we dealt everybody four song cards to give them a better chance of knowing a song well) and matches it to the subject on their subject card.
Sometimes the subject card has a quotation on it; in these cases, you must incorporate the quote in your song lyrics.
Once the time is up, players may finish the line of lyrics they’re working on. Now they take turns performing their song for the group! (I guess a song lyrics game would not be much fun without the chance to sing…)
Once everybody has finished laughing their asses off, it’s time to vote. Depending on the number of players, you can award a gold (1pt), platinum (2pts) or diamond (3pts) Smash award, or declare the effort a Trash. The winner is the person with the most points.
Pros and cons
Our group enjoyed this game much more than we initially expected to. My wife was particularly negative about the concept, but then when she tried it, had a really good time.
Several types of person will hate this game. Anybody too shy to perform a song in public; anybody who can’t write for toffee; anybody with zero musical knowledge. Probably this is a game best reserved for extroverts. Beer helps a lot in greasing the wheels of musical creativity.
I can’t sing to save my life, but still belted out a couple of fun remakes of ‘Singing in the Rain’ and A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’.
We felt it was a bit unfair to declare anybody’s effort Trash, because rewriting a song within seven minutes, then daring to sing it afterwards, is a major challenge. I suppose there needs to be a way to pick a winner, but at the risk of sounding too touchy-feely, I think everybody’s a winner with this fun song lyrics game!
Smash or Trash is a great concept. Just don’t expect everybody to be enthusiastic about it when you suggest a game.
