Quick verdict

Candy Land: Give Kids the World Village Edition is themed after a children’s illness and recovery resort in Florida. It has the same basic layout as regular Candy Land, yet contains a higher purpose than just a sugar rush.

The game and gameplay

This game plays identically to traditional Candy Land, but with a different look to it.

Click here to Put Your Foot Down: submit your OWN Footprint Rating and leave comments for this game! You start by selecting your colored Gingerbread pawn (Blue, Red, Yellow, or Green), of which have upgraded to being sturdier than when I played as a kid. Make sure the moving cards are shuffled, then have the youngest player draw one first.

The beauty of Candy Land is that it is very simple for youngsters to play. As long as they’re not colorblind, they need only to follow the directions of their drawn card.

Sometimes a drawn card will cause a participant to move forward or backward a la Chutes and Ladders/Snakes and Ladders, or lose a turn if they land on a red Ice Cream space. Shortcuts exist on the board, but you need to land on the proper stepping stone by exact count to utilize the trails.

It’s all just a randomized race to the final place, the Castle of Miracles.

Alternatively, you can opt to make it easier or harder (respectively) by eliminating the rule of moving backward, or drawing two cards on a turn and choosing from there. Game instructions are also in Spanish.Pros and cons

Candy Land Give Kids the World edition. Buy to support the charity. This game makes for a good charity auction item. If you have yet to introduce your little one to Candy Land, why not substitute this version instead?

On the other hand, kids who have already been exposed to the old Candy Land may not like this new addition. The game’s creators took out all of the lovable, candy-themed characters and replaced them with unknown, must-be-diabetic generics.

The storyline they include makes little sense and doesn’t spell out the whole purpose of the theme too clearly. Indeed, the only clue you get as to why the Candy Land is themed this way at all is found in a tiny paragraph in the lower corner on the back of the box.

As with normal Candy Land, too, your kids will outgrow its simplicity within a few years.

The verdict

I don’t want to seem heartless by rating it a 2, but I have to be honest: I really can’t see why healthy people would choose to get this version of Candy Land in lieu of the much more fun, traditional take. I think it really only appeals to those wishing to be charitable, or who are emotionally connected to the cause because they have ill kids, too.
