Quick verdict

Big Boggle is a challenging word game for word lovers. If you have a large vocabulary, you’ll like Big Boggle.

The game and gameplay

If you are familiar with the game of Boggle, then you already know how to play Big Boggle. It’s more challenging than the original game, because you are required to spell words of at least 4 letters instead of just 3.

To start the game, you put all 25 letter cubes into the plastic cover, set the base on top, and shake the cubes to randomize them.Eventually you need to get the cubes to settle into their slots in the base. When everyone is ready, you flip the 3-minute timer and remove the cover from the base.

Each player then has 3 minutes to spell as many words as they can using the 25 letters visible in the grid.

You may start with any letter and move to any letter that is vertically, horizontally, or diagonally adjacent. The only other restriction is that you may not use the same cube more than once in your word.

When the timer runs out, one player reads his list of words aloud. If any other player has written the same word, all players must cross that word off their lists.

If there are more than 2 players, the second player would do the same with any remaining words. This process continues until there are no duplicates left on any two players’ lists.

Then you score points for any words still on your list. The longer the word, the more points it’s worth.

4 = 1
5 = 2
6 = 3
7 = 5
8 or more = 11

You can determine the number of rounds you play or the point total required for a win beforehand. You might play one round per participant or until someone reaches 100 points, for example.

The official rules state that the minimum number of players is 2, but there’s no reason you can’t play it solo for practice.

Pros and cons

If you have both younger and more experienced players, you can adjust the skill level required. You can have younger players spell 3-letter words and still require everyone else to use the 4-letter minimum.

The components of Big Boggle are solid and sturdy. They should last a very long time.
