This is an update to the successful Atmosfear board game back in the heyday of VCRs. It’s genuinely chilling and, well, atmospheric, and is a perfect game for Halloween, or a teen sleepover party.
The game and gameplay
In this fast-paced game, the object is to win the game before 49 minutes is up. Players must race around the board to collect six laid out keys of different kind before heading to the center of the board.
During the course of the game, the gatekeeper frequently appears on screen to interrupt the players. If neither player wins after 49 minutes has passed, the gatekeeper wins and all players lose automatically.
The DVD itself comes with a short rundown of rules which really helps if you want to play instantly without going over the paper rules. The game may start slow at first while tension is just starting to build up.
However, the gameplay seriously speeds up as the game progresses, especially during the final minutes of play when someone races the clock to beat the Gatekeeper. While players must work against each other to stand a chance of winning the game, some teamwork is evident as the end draw near where each player passes the dice as quickly as possible so just anyone could defeat the Gatekeeper.
Pros and Cons
A lot of things could happen in this interactive game which would really affect the progress of each player. Keeping track what’s going on could be difficult at first, because of the interruptions, though it’s not that much of a problem the second time around.
The best improvement in Atmosfear is the random and varied gameplay. The encounters with the Gatekeeper are randomized rather than at the same time in every game. Also, new events can come up at any given time because the DVD player selects the scenes randomly. This way, each game plays differently, which really adds to its replayability.
The game components and board and very high quality and will last well for many plays.
