Quick verdict

Mystery Express is an extremely challenging deduction game in the spirit of Clue that offers a challenge for experienced gamers that can be enjoyed by casual gamers as well.

The game and gameplay

In Mystery Express, you take the role of a detective aboard the famed Orient Express and, wouldn’t you know it, there was a murder. Now it’s up to you to discover who, how, why, where, and when the murder was committed by the time the train reaches its final destination.

Like in Clue, the players will deduce these elements of the crime through the passing of cards. The twist is, unlike Clue, where there is only one copy of each card and you are trying to discover which card is missing, there are two copies of each card, and you are trying to discover which card has only one copy floating around.

There are primarily two ways in which you do this. As you arrive at each city, you there are specific actions associated with each city that help you see more cards. The primary method however is as you take your turns during your journey between cities.

As you travel, you are given 4 or 5 hours to use as you see fit. The hours are spent by taking actions in the different cards of the train. Each car has a different action that allows you to see and pass cards in different ways.

When you arrive at your final destination, everyone announces their deductions (or guesses) for each element of the crime and the player with the most correct is the winner.

As I have already stated, this is a very difficult game. It is often not possible to deduce all 5 elements of the crime and have no guesses. This could lead to a lucky guesser winning a game over a more skilled deducer. This is rare, but it also makes the game more appealing to casual gamers.

Pros and cons

This game presents a challenge for all kinds of gamers, a fresh take on deduction games, and beautiful artwork and components.

There is a long playtime, too much luck for some, and the player markers have a tendency to chip.

The verdict

Mystery Express board game is a very difficult game. In most games, you do not deduce all of the elements of the crime and must do some educated guessing. I like to see this as a challenge to be beaten, but some may be turned off by it. For those who enjoy deduction games, Mystery Express presents a fresh new take that will keep you coming back for more.
