The game and gameplay
Hacienda is a board game that has a lot going for it. It has tiles, theme, interaction, a double-sided board, money not made of paper, smiling animals, and more.
Hacienda is a type of area control game. You control spaces on the board as you take your animals – sheep, pigs, horses, and cattle – to market. The more spaces you control, the better your chances of winning. You have a hand of animal and land cards that correspond to your supply of animal and land tiles. And yes, all the animals on the cards have a smile on their faces. You play your cards to place tiles on the board.
Try to keep your land tiles together for more points. You place your animal tiles leading towards one of the market spaces on the board to collect money when you sell them at the market.
Watering your land and animals with the water tiles and placing haciendas on your longer chains of tiles will also lead towards a victory.
One of the cool things about the Hacienda board game is the money. The money cards, which come in denominations from 1 to 50 pesos, are made of the same high-quality material as the animal and land cards.
Another nice feature is the double-sided board. You’ll probably start with the “dog bone” side, but you’ll soon want to try out the flip side which is asymmetrical.
Pros and cons
The production value is excellent.
The game plays very well with any number of players.
The coloration fits the theme, but it is a tad drab.
Since there are only two scoring phases – one half way through and the other at the end of the game – the tension remains until the final count.
Find some friends, break out the game, – buy it first, if necessary – and have a great time playing Hacienda.
