Quick verdict

The 4 new decks of cards add even more variety to the Agricola game, some of which will appeal to you and some of which may not. You’re almost certain to appreciate the stickers, themed player boards, and replacement veggies, animals, and resources which all look more realistic than the original cubes and disks.

The game and gameplay

Important note: This is an expansion that cannot be played without the base game of Agricola.Nothing really needs to be said about the stickers, boards, and replacement bits, so I’ll get right to the new decks of cards known by the letters X, Ö, CZ, and L.

The X deck contains 24 cards which are optionally drawn when you take the stone available on the quarry space in Stage II of Agricola. These cards introduce alien life forms into your farm! It’s a light-hearted addition that can have dire consequences. You might not be able to afford the card drawn. There’s one alien card that can even burn down your wooden house.

Many of the cards pay homage to popular science fiction topics such as Star Wars, ET, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, The X Files, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, crop circles, ley lines, and more. The Ö in the Ö deck stands for Österreich; that is, Austria, so these cards add several notable Austrians to the mix – Mozart, Freud, and the Von Trapp family singers, to name a few. There are also 12 new minor improvements that offer new possibilities.

The CZ deck includes 12 occupations and 12 improvements based on famous people, places, and historic events from the Czech Republic – the golem, Nicholas, a bureaucrat, a bagpiper, and much more.

Apparently nobody knows what the L stands for in the remaining deck. The new occupation cards show photos of many prominent gamers including designers, publishers, and the like. It is another set of cards not meant to be taken too seriously.

Pros and cons

The stickers, boards, veggies, animals, and shapely resources add a lot of appeal to an already desirable game.

The Ö and CZ decks are probably the meatiest for those interested in adding more variety to the base game. The X deck is great if you’re in a silly mood and don’t care too much who wins.

The L deck may be the least useful, but you may appreciate it if you are very familiar with the personalities involved.

The verdict

You will enjoy Agricola: the Goodies Expansion if you have ever wished for better bits than the cubes and disks in the original game. Since there are already so many cards in the base game, you may not appreciate the new decks as much unless you are a true connoisseur of the game.
