Westward 3 is my kind of game! Real-time strategy in the wild west during the gold rush era. It has elements of adventure as well and bags of personality. Truly, an excellent game.
What's it about?
Get out yer shovel, pioneer! It's time to head westward in search of fortune. Gold is literally lying around on the ground and somebody has to pick it up -- why not you?
Whichever hero you choose to represent you in the game, you'll actually find yourself less motivated by greed and more by the milk of human kindness. Each level sets you various tasks; some related to construction and research, others to ridding the area of bandits or saving somebody's bacon.
Pioneer life was very tough. Before grabbing gold nuggets with both hands, you'll have to secure a food and water supply and find some place to sleep. Bushes yield fruit and you can shoot deer and rabbit to eat, but a farm and well are the keys to long-term food security.
The RTS elements are strong. You must put any friendly folk you meet to work, harvesting wood or sowing and planting crops, to get the resources you'll need to invest in more improvements to your budding settlement.
Gold is an incentive on many levels and required for many of the upgrades. You can build various mines to extract ore from hills and rivers, or trade resources with trading posts.
Throughout all the levels, a story threads its way neatly and really adds to the enjoyment.

Westward 3 is a superb RTS/adventure blend which is a fabulous value for money purchase. Highly recommended.
