Quick verdict

Reader’s Digest Super Word Power is like one big test, but it’s one you’ll be glad to take. It reminds me of my junior year College Prep (vocabulary) class.

What's it about?

Reader’s Digest Super Word Power gets right to the point with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it loading screen. The only options are technical ones involving screen size and game volume. Now select from two modes to play: Quizzler or Twister.

With Quizzler, you’ll get a word that you must couple with its meaning in fifteen seconds or less. You start at level one with a set of ten exercises, each of them multiple choice.

If you have done well by the end of your set it’ll say (in alternating colored letters): "You know enough words to go on to the next round!" For the first few rounds you’ll want to respond with, "Gee, I hope so. It’s a language that I’m supposed to be fluent in, after all."

I was surprised by some of the modern words in the Super Word Power game like voice mail, spam, and café latte. The multiple choice possibilities are like synonyms; selecting the correct choice breeds the full definition. You can hit enter to speed up the round process and hints are available.

You have to retry a level if you don’t define enough words accurately, allowing you to learn and improve, as the presented words remain the same. The game will tally your improvements and inform you of your results at the close of your retry.

With each level of the Super Word Power game you pass, the number of words in the exercise goes up, meaning the amount of words you need to “know” does, too. A fast-paced bonus round follows each word set and involves grouping a pool of words into pairs. When you’re done playing you can’t save a game, but your high score and level you made it to are recorded.

Twister is the same definition-matching concept, except instead of multiple choice there are letters to unscramble.

You have 60 seconds to read the word or sentence clue and unscramble the set of letters, clicking on them to spell them in the space above Scrabble-style. Your creation will auto-submit if you are right, but turn red if you are wrong.

You can Twist (shuffle) the tiles at any time if you get stuck, or ask the computer to provide a limited freebie letter. Twister seems to be harder than Quizzler, perhaps because you are without options and must decipher an unknown.

You can go to High Scores and hit Word Tracker to see Words Learned and Words to Practice (compilations of the words you had trouble with). Hit either to have the game quiz you, and improve even more.

Pros and cons

Reader’s Digest Super Word Power is a must for those who proudly own multiple dictionaries. It’s great for bettering your brain and acquiring “big” words. The calm, department store music should prove to be relaxing as you play (or at least not distracting).

The lack of a save feature is a tiny bit unnerving, having to start all the way back to Level One for a new go. Sometimes you’ll know the word listed, but none of the definitions will seem to fit. Who knew an antioxidant could be described as a preservative, for example? Uh, I thought it was just something that fought cancer; I wasn’t aware that it could possibly keep my bread fresh.

The verdict

"Wordies" and those looking to increase their vocab can benefit from the Super Word Power game. If you’ve always hated English as a subject, though, stay away.
