Puzzle Hero is kind of Puzzle Quest Lite. It's fun, though quite limited in scope, but addictive as all Match 3 games and worth spending your Fun Ticket on if you have nothing better this month.
What's it about?
Start a character and go on a quest. It's the classic RPG scenario you've heard a million times. This time, though, it's combined with puzzle action.
Match 3 games are hugely popular, so it's no surprise that game designers have turned their hand to combining puzzle action with other genres. The excellent Puzzle Quest set the bar way too high for this game to compete, but Puzzle Hero is still engaging.
You meet a succession of monsters, each one more powerful and smarter than the previous one. During battle, you must match three or more symbols to either attack, defend, grab extra experience or gold, or mix a healing potion to staunch your wounds.
Match four or more in a single move and you get a bonus turn. This also applies to the monsters, though, so plan your moves carefully to prevent them from taking advantage of a favourable board.
After each level, you can visit a shop to spend your hard-earned coin on upgrades to armour, weapons and magic items. You can also cash in your old equipment to put money towards a better upgrade.
Every few levels, there's story scenes which move the quest forward. You can skip these if you like, it won't make any difference to the outcome.

+ Match 3 games are always challenging and addictive.
+ Turn-based format means you don't have to rush. It's brains, not reflexes, that count here.
+ Lots of fun upgrades to spend your money on.
+ An array of interesting monsters to fight, all nicely rendered graphically.
- An obvious derivative of Puzzle Quest and nowhere near as good from an RPG perspective.
The verdict
While limited in scope, Puzzle Hero will appeal to Match 3 fans seeking a new challenge, though if you have already played Puzzle Quest, this will seem like a come-down.
