Quick verdict

Pizza Chef is a charming match game where combos meet combination pizzas. Call me biased because I l-o-v-e pizza, but I believe this game is stuffed with goodness.

What’s it about?

A town that doesn’t know good pizza? Mama mia! Thankfully you and Pizza Chef are here to save the day.

You’ll have a few seconds to prep your "kitchen" before customers start arriving. This entails trading toppings in a grid in the usual Match 3-style to turn the burners on.

As pizza patrons pile in, make their dietary dreams come true by dragging the shaped pies out of their thought bubbles and onto available burner space.

You can adjust the eats to fit more productively with a mouse click, aiming to lay down a bunch of edibles at once to maximize your score.

Bear in mind that burners turn off after a pizza has been placed, meaning you’ll have to be consistently making matches to keep the oven warm.

It’s never fun waiting too long for a pizza delivery, and the same goes with these in-store guests.

People get cranky when they’re hungry. To quiet them, an occasional cup of coffee is available, and special sedation sundaes drop in when you make big matches of five or more. Bombs and a battery (which will temporarily light all burners when charged) also help.

You get the chance to go shopping after every level. Loads of upgrades are available, from eight different pizza types to buy to improved coffee, snacks, and oven size.

Adding to the mix as you travel across the town are two additional types of levels. The first is a sort of puzzle round where you must fit a set of orders into a confined space perfectly to pass. The second is a hidden object level. The different game varieties are fun and keep the overall venture hot and fresh.

Pros and cons

+ Challenging and addicting.

+ Expert scores awarded.

+ You don’t cook just pizzas, but burgers, fries, and toast, too.

+ Money is collected automatically.

+ Little sounds clue you in to in-game happenings (customers grr when angry, for example).

+ 70-plus levels to satisfy your appetite (I beat the whole game!).

- Mediocre graphics.

- You can’t voluntarily replay a level (you have to start a new profile).

- Many have complained that it’s a rip-off of Burger Rush, another Match 3/eats game. I love this game, though.

The verdict

My personal rating for this game is a high 4.5... but thinking of the "average consumer", I’ll bring it down to a 4. Despite a few typos and minor glitches, Pizza Chef’s gameplay is fully deserving of a second (and third and fourth) helping.

A lot of fun

I found the earlier levels to be a bit on the easy side, but this game grows and grows as you make progress. It's well worth trying out if you like Match 3 games!
