Quick verdict

Party Down is a time management game in the vein of Diner Dash, Anna's Ice Cream and numerous others. It has several nice features which make it stand out, but the gameplay is too derivative to be truly original.

What's it about?

As a failing actor or actress in Tinseltown, you decide to switch gears into party management in the hope of rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous.

You and your team must keep the guests happy, while chatting to people of a suitable star quality to improve your own star ratings.

Seat guests where they demand, keep them fed and watered, move them to the dance floor or towards conversation with other guests, take their coats, then sidle up to them in the VIP section and begin chatting.

The VIPs are nicely drawn and animated and their dance moves are especially amusing.

Snooty stars and starlets will refuse to talk to you if your star rating is too low, so you'll have to build up your reputation by hanging with the noobs at first. Star ratings also level up your character abilities, allowing you to move faster/do your job better, or be a better conversationalist.

Empty plates and glasses are a frustration, because they prevent you from serving fresh food and drink and must be cleared away.

Of course the usual problems of time management games occur in Party Down: ever increasing numbers of guests, all demanding assistance at once. You, the concierge, DJ, barmaid and chef must keep on top of all the orders and still take time out to hobnob.

It's not easy being a wannabee!

Pros and cons

+ Nicely modeled graphics, although sometimes they do look a touch Stepford Wives-like. You'll snigger when you recognise some quite closely approximated famous faces and bodies, although surely SHE wouldn't be seen eating chicken and rice in public?!

+ A good variety of tasks to perform, which is a double-edged sword as the game gets progressively harder...

+ Good music which changes from level to level. Also, each party is hosted in a new graphical environment. This does mean...

- It can be confusing when you begin a new party, because you have to re-learn what everything looks like in the new graphic skin.

- Very frustrating that your servers don't have enough AI to pick up two empties or drinks and carry them at the same time without you asking.

- Apart from the graphics, not very original.

The verdict

Party Down is a game you will either enjoy, or completely bypass. It's yet another variation on the theme. They're popular, so I suppose we won't be seeing any lack of new time management games, but I think the breed needs some genetic modification before it grows too stale.
