The latest edition of Mortimer Beckett is the first I've ever played. After giving it a try, I can understand why the series is well-liked and found to be enjoyable.
What's it about?
The movie-esque storyline is this: in the land of Zantya, the king has gone missing and has been replaced by evildoer Cedric Syper. Humble redhead Mortimer Beckett is called upon by the townsfolk to locate the king. He also has to find the jeweled crown that gives the royalty his power (I guess it's kind of like Frosty's magic hat).
How Mortimer goes about tracking the king down is via eight worlds of hidden object and puzzle exercises.
In a given city, Mortimer must do a few loops through the different areas in order to satisfy the game's goals. Within a level's inventory are a collection of objects to locate amongst the scenery, and rather than a list, these items are shown to you in their actual picture form. There is also no time limit.
Before you think that all sounds too easy, you should know that the objects are hidden quite cleverly and deeply, and sometimes require you to solve a puzzle or do an activity to locate an item that's locked away in say, a cupboard. You need to locate certain items before access to remaining objects is possible. It turns into kind of an adventure based on the way that the things interact with each other.
So, in summary, the basic premise of a Mortimer Beckett and the Lost King level is comprised of three parts: first, locate all of the hidden objects; second, perform whatever mini-game or puzzle is necessary to reveal a crown jewel fragment; and third, find your way out of the current world and into the next one.
