While it's a lot more basic than Jojo's Fashion Show, Fashion Star offers up some unique twists and can still be enjoyable. If you dream about being a designer or photographer, this is the game for you!
What’s it about?
The game instantly inserts you into the storyline that you’re going to try to make it as a freelance fashion stylist. Much to the real world’s surprise, you’re actually successful at getting some gigs, all at magazines with names like Chic, Teen Scene, and Urban Classic.
Rather than the editor’s providing you with models as it would normally go, you get to pick (and even create) your own gals (the downside is they’re all kind of, uh, fat by the industry’s standards).
Each of the sixteen fashion designer games levels will start with a job description from the digest du jour. It will quickly (and cryptically) explain what’s expected of you at the next shoot. Then you will need to hunt down your Heidi Klum and possibly go shopping for her (you don’t get to use her credit card though, sorry!). Browse through the offerings of shirts, jackets, bottoms, shoes, and accessories to design an outfit that will meet the editor’s (and you budget’s) guidelines. You can even customize the colors.
When you’re satisfied with your photos, head back to the main screen to get judged. The magazine exec will give you up to a five-star rating for your color, clothing, and environment choices (all individually). The overall score is what determines if you pass or not and is what results in earning money for more fabulous fashions!
Pros and cons
+ You can read the specific likes and dislikes of an editor.
+ Purchased wardrobe is available to re-wear at any time at no additional cost.
+ More than 300 clothing items.
+ Customizing a model from scratch (think Simone) is one of the best parts of the whole event.
- The graphics look like a kindergartener cut them out of construction paper.
- The big tops get very hard to please later in the game, forcing you to re-dress and re-shoot your entire concept several times over.
The verdict
Creativity is in your control with Fashion Star. The game was a good idea, but one that was too quickly executed.
