With its blend of clever gameplay and choice of relaxed or frantic modes, Bookworm Deluxe is a truly original word game that's none the worse for being so familiar.
What's it about?
If you've ever seen the game Boggle, then Bookworm will be very familiar to you.
Form words by clicking on one letter and then chaining letters together. A completed word is worth more points if you use more letters. Once you complete a word, the letters you formed it with vanish and new ones drop in from the top of the screen.
On the left of the screen is your bookworm. When you complete a word, he opens his mouth wide to swallow the letters, rewarding you with books which stack up along a "shelf". When you fill the shelf, you level up and things get more difficult.

The difficulty level is not due to the letters, which are apparently randomized (we didn't find any bias in the letters which appear, even at higher levels).
Instead, "hot" letters appear. These must be used up soon, or they burn the letters below them, sinking towards the bottom of the screen.
If a hot letter reaches the bottom, you lose. More hot letters appear depending on the level and whether you form too many short words. If hot letters stack on top of each other, their burning effect is intensified.
There are other benefits for looking for longer words. Green and gold letters appear, which give multiplier bonuses if you use them in words. Snag a seven-letter word and a diamond letter appears, worth even more in combination with other letters.
The good news for those of us who prefer thinking to acting rapidly is, the "career" mode of Bookworm Deluxe is sedate. You don't need to hurry. There is no time limit.
But if this is too slow for you, arcade mode will be quite hard enough! Here, letters turn fiery as you play and the average game length is very short.

Pros and cons
+ Simple, clean presentation, shallow learning curve and emphasis on word power make this a superb choice for older gamers who enjoy a good book!
+ Surprisingly addictive at the slow pace; much the better game than the arcade mode.
+ Very satisfying to chain letters together; rewards strategic thought. You can plan to remove letters to set yourself up for big scores.
- Non-readers will feel like complete dummies; there's not much here for people who don't dig word games.
The verdict
Bookworm is manna for Scrabble game fans. It's fun, educational and suitable for a wide range of age groups. This free Bookworm download game is a total bargain!
