Quick verdict

When I first heard a game called “Diaper Dash” was coming out, I immediately thought, Hmm, I hope it’s not just about poop (they’re making time management games about anything and everything these days, so you never know...). While diaper changing definitely has its role in this venture, one also does an insane amount of running around tending to a bunch of other things, too.

What’s it about?

It’s rare in the time management world to get the option of a male character, and Diaper Dash is the first in the genre that I’ve played to star one exclusively.

That XY is Wilson, who in a somewhat controversial storyline, got fired for picking up a crying baby that was being used as a test subject for an evil corporation. He decides to continue his creativity for infant inventions by opening his own, more humane laboratory, which - for all practical purposes - will run as a daycare.

DinerTown must not have a law regulating the number of kids Wilson can care for on his own, because he ends up having to deal with a kindergarten's worth every day.

Babies are dropped off in the playpen waiting area endlessly throughout a day, where Wilson must go to grab and carry them to their next destination. A thought bubble distinguishes their current want (oh, wouldn’t that be nice in real life?), but the infants are never content until their mom or dad comes to pick them up again.

First a tot want to feed, then he’ll have to poop, then he’ll want to play, then he’ll have to poop again, then he’ll need a nap, and finally, one more poop before he’s back in pop’s arms again. Did I mention a dozen of his peers will be going through a same sort of sequence, all at the same time?

The main component of the gameplay is swapping one baby for another, a la Doggie Dash. If kid #1 is in a highchair and now wants to play, you can switch her with kid #2 who is at the play station but now wants to sleep, and so on and so forth. Try to color combo the two genders as much as possible to rev up the multiplier.

Not only do you have 26 different kiddies each desiring like, five different activities before they’ll get the heck out of Dodge, but being babies, they’re going to cry if they don’t get what they want in time, costing you points. It’s actually kind of cute when they do their warning wails... that is, until their faces turn purple like they’re going to pass out and their parent then snatches them out of the daycare in a huff.

The children are also messy; nearly every time they leave a seat, a disgusting green fog gets left behind. Understandably, parents don’t like it as much if they have to pick their toddler up from an unhygienic environment and will therefore tip you less if you fail to put in some sweeping time (or have your Mr. Bucket-esque cleaning invention do it for you).

The last common challenge can be found in the pants of the un-potty-trained. Your changing station can only hold up to five soiled nappies, after which you must make a puke face and throw them away before the counter can accommodate more kiddies. This is a frequent and annoying task, and if you forget it was full and are holding a baby, you must find a place to set her before you can empty the station.

Pros and Cons

+ Cute baby laughs and rattle sounds during navigation.

+ If the graphics and animation had cheeks, you’d want to pinch them - that’s how adorable they are.

+ Plenty of upgrades, from a more productive Wilson to lighted play stations that make the babies happier.

+ Wilson’s inventions are automatic extra upgrades and typically occur mid-way through a stage. They are: a cleaning machine, a teddy bear dispenser, a phone to call in a clown or ballerina, a storybook reader, and fast shoes.

+ 50 fun-filled levels that stay fresh with new graphics and level-by-level mishaps like a broken cleaning machine or especially gassy babies.

+ Endless Day available.

- The click mechanics are often troublesome.

- Playfirst promised recognizable characters, but I could only point out two of the parents, and they were from Diner Dash.

The verdict

The DASH games are usually top-notch, and this one is no exception. Even if you’ve had some bad brushes with baby-sitting before, you’ll certainly go gaga for Diaper Dash.
