Christopher from El Paso reveals some Scrabble secrets!

Defense in Scrabble is both easy and difficult to play. It's easy in that a lot of the basics come naturally to most players and difficult in that, except for the end of the game, you can't be sure of what letters your opponent has, which creates the danger of a brilliant block turning into a hole you can't dig out of!

Some of the best ways to implement this. For a good defense, never open a game with an E, S, R, or T on the center square. Your opponent will love you if you place one of these letters as it gives them lots of great chances from the beginning.

A vowel next to a colored square is a hot spot your opponent can score on. The C, Z, Q, and V are useful for playing near the triple lines because they don't take hooks. J and K are also strategic because they only have back hooks.

A 3-letter play parallel to another word can effectively block off up to 5 bingo lines while scoring good points. Avoid giving away triple word score plays. Really avoid giving away triple-triples.

Learn words that don't take an S hook and use them. If you're going to leave a hook, it helps to have the letter needed for the hook already in your rack.
